Scripture only lists two titles of leadership in the local church: Elders and Deacons. The following is a brief description of each.
Elders (also known as shepherds, overseers, pastors), are men who are responsible for the overall pastoral leadership, governing, oversight and teaching of the congregation (Ephesians 4:11-13, I Timothy 3:1-7, Acts 20:28, 1 Peter 5:1-4). An elder is called to care for Jesus’ church by teaching scripture, preaching the gospel, and leading the church.
A deacon serves those in need and helps to meet physical needs in the congregation (Acts 6:1-7; I Timothy 3: 8-13). Deacons offer help to those in crisis by assessing their physical needs and working to find practical solutions. Unlike elders who are responsible for teaching the gospel and overseeing the church, deacons focus on physical acts of mercy and compassion.
Joel Gilbert, pastor
Joel serves as pastor at First Baptist Church of Roselawn. Since being called to this church Joel has lived to fulfill his mandate as a faithful pastor. He follows the ministry philosophy of “Preach the Word” and let the Spirit of God build His church (as He said He would!).
It may sound too simple of an approach, but it is one that is based off of scripture (which will never pass away and remain true in every culture and setting, seeing how the omniscient Spirit of the Lord breathed out the Scripture- 2 Tim. 3:16)
Joel and his wife Niki moved to Demotte a couple of years ago and really enjoy serving the Lord here! God has blessed the Gilbert family with three wonderful children: Keelie, Kenzie, and Paisely.
